During his childhood, MacFarlane garnered an interest in illustration. He began by drawing the cartoon characters Fred Flintstone and Woody Woodpecker. By the time he was five years old, he knew that he wanted to pursue a career in animation and began to create flip books.
When he was nine years old, MacFarlane began publishing a weekly comic strip titled "Walter Crouton" for The Kent Good Times Dispatch, the local newspaper in Kent.
