Haley Joel Osment Got the Role Because He Wore a Tie

Haley Joel Osment's father, theatre actor Michael Osment, reportedly made sure that his son read the entire script three times in order to prepare for the role. When M. Night Shyamalan asked Osment if he'd read his part, Osment said, "I read it three times last night."

Shyamalan replied, "Wow, you read your part three times?" Osment said, "No, I read the script three times." Osment was also reportedly the only boy at the auditions who wore a tie. After his audition, Shyamalan said he didn't want to make the film without Osment.
